The last few weeks before summer comes to a close is the perfect time to rock the latest trend: denim shorts. Since it's been awhile since I've perfected this look, I got some words of wisdom from my fashionista friends and some of my favorite fashion sites. Here's the lowdown on how to keep this look current...
Length: Short-shorts, mid-thigh, just above-the-knee and capri length are all OK. Do not try super short-shorts unless you're in your teens or 20's or have an absolutely rockin' body. And don't wear denim shorts to work or to any formal event.
Style: Cut-offs/distressed, boyfriend relaxed fit with rolled cuffs and dark, dressy denim are the most popular styles. If you are blessed enough to pull off the shorter styles, cut-offs are great this season as they mirror the 'distressed' jean look, and you can add some more rips throughout to really master the trend. For a more forgiving style, rolled cuffs and a little baggier fit give you the 'boyfriend jean' look. Shorts that are really more like capris are best for people with long legs and a slim build. Even though this style is most popular for women over 40, it looks best on tall and thin shapes.
Accessories: Anything goes. Denim shorts look equally great with flats or with heels, just make sure your accessories match the overall vibe of your outfit. For a super casual look, wear to the beach with your favorite flip-flops, sun hat and bright summer shirt. Go western with a big belt, cowboy boots and plaid shirt or unleash your inner-rocker-chic with studded belt, lots of necklaces and bangles, black leather accessories and an oversized shoulder bag. Or choose to go sporty, with a baseball cap, tight fitting top with girly accessories and trendy athletic shoes.
